Kellogg Fellow Jeremy Howick Designs BBC Horizon’s Placebo Experiment

9 October 2018

Over the past 10 years Kellogg Fellow Dr Jeremy Howick has been investigating the rules of evidence that govern whether we should believe medical interventions benefit patients and placebo effects.

For BBC Horizon’s latest episode, The Placebo Experiment: Can my brain cure my body? Jeremy designed an experiment to assist presenter Dr Michael Mosley with Britain’s largest trial into the placebo effect.  117 volunteers suffering from back pain are recruited to a trial for a new painkiller, which is in fact a blue and white capsule containing nothing but ground rice.  Will this fake treatment make a real difference? And how will the volunteers react when the truth is revealed? Click below to watch the episode and find out.
