‘Leave’ Talk Prevailed on Facebook ‘Brexit’ Sites

An article published in the New York Times on the role of Facebook in the EU referendum mentions research published earlier this month by Vyacheslav Polonski, a Kellogg DPhil student and researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute, on Brexit  activity on Instagram. He examined the activities of over 15,000 users who engaged in the referendum debate. “We’ve noted that EU sceptics and Brexit supporters dominate the debate and are more effective in their use of Instagram for activating and mobilizing people across the country,” he wrote. “They also tend to be more passionate, active and outspoken in their online behaviour,” he continued, noting that they generated “almost five times” as many posts as their opponents.
