Travelling with Kellogg

10 May 2018

The Kellogg College Travel Grant is available to all Kellogg DPhil and MPhil students, studying on either a full-time or part-time basis.

Linda Beyer, is currently studying for a DPhil in Sustainable Urban Development, she applied for, and was awarded, a Kellogg Travel Grant in Hilary Term 2018. Linda used the grant to help fund her attendance at the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) – Local Governments for Sustainability Resilient Cities 2018 in Bonn, Germany, in April 2018.

Linda discussing her DPhil research findings

As part of the forum, Linda provided an exhibition/poster presentation, Urban food deserts: Exploring dimensions of food security and resilience. The tale of two slums in Nairobi, highlighting the early findings from her DPhil analysis, undertaken in 2017-18. She was also co-presenter on a panel presentation on measurement of social cohesion, entitled Urban resilience bridging humanitarian support and urban development in Somalia.

Linda’s presence at the forum has led to her developing links with other organisations in food sector and resilience, as well as giving her the opportunity to: connect with the ICLEI Secretariat, with a view to attending the ICLEI World Congress and MUFP, later in 2018; speak with the editor from Springer about the possibility of publishing with them; also the editor from City Food Network, with a view to providing content for upcoming publications; be interviewed for a local radio programme in Bonn!

Linda commented that receiving the Travel Grant and being able to participate in Resilient Cities 2018, enabled her “…to gain critical feedback on the conceptual clarity/relevance of my DPhil research, as well emerging findings to areas of interest/emerging focus, during the exhibition hall. This feedback is formative in both validating and developing key areas of analysis from my DPhil research and [in particular], how this interfaces with current/emerging policy and practice.”

“I am very grateful for this opportunity!”

Travel Grants are awarded termly, so if you would like to apply for a Trinity Term Travel Grant, further information can be found here. The deadline is noon on 25th May 2018.
