David’s principal research concentrates on the contemporary societies of the Caribbean and Latin America, with a specific focus on urban geography and social sustainability. His interests lie at the interface between social and urban geography, and postcolonial and development studies. Recent research projects have concentrated on the urban environment, development and social change in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica.

David is the Director of Research at the Department for Continuing Education, leads the MSc in Sustainable Urban Developmentprogramme at the Continuing Professional Development Centre, and is a member of the Management Committee for the Latin American Centre at Oxford. He was previously a Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Geography at the University of Edinburgh, following postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford, the City University of New York and the University of Melbourne.

Outwith the University, he is a CNRS Research Associate at LAM (Les Afriques dans le Monde)
Sciences Po Bordeaux – Université de Bordeaux, and a member of the Latin America and Caribbean Panel at the British Academy. David was the Co-ordinating Editor for the Bulletin of Latin American Research and the associated Wiley-Blackwell book series (2006-2013). He was Chair of the Society for Caribbean Studies (2006-2010), and  co-directed the Joint Initiative for the Study of Latin America and the Caribbean, which supports multidisciplinary seminar networks and seed grants for new research.
