Trained in social anthropology, I carried out my doctoral research on educational cultures in Uganda. My research interests now focus on the study of higher education, and in particular the history and governance of the social sciences. Recent work includes research on the transformation of doctoral education. My published monographs include Ethnography and Education (2013), and Difficult Folk: A Political History of Social Anthropology (2008).
I have held lectureships in Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Development Studies and now Education. I am Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Education, and convene Doctoral Training in the Social Sciences (Oxford’s ESRC-funded Doctoral Training Centre).
