Dr Jessica Briggs is Departmental Lecturer in Second Language Acquisition at the Department of Education and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Jess teaches and supervises on the MSc in Applied Linguistics & Second Language Acquisition and the MSc/PGDip in Teaching English Language in University Settings.

Prior to becoming an applied linguist Jess worked for many years as an English language teacher in the UK and overseas. Her research, which is currently funded by a John Fell Fund award, focuses on second language acquisition in non-traditional settings, such as informal (i.e. out of class) learning contexts and in English Medium Instruction (EMI) education. Jess is particularly interested in language learner strategies and second language vocabulary use and development.
