Kate is Director of the University’s Foreign Service Programme.  A lawyer and a diplomat, her interests lie in diplomacy, public international law and human rights law. Kate read law at Somerville, then trained and qualified as a commercial litigation solicitor in London.  During this period she spent several months at the Court of Appeal, as judicial assistant to Lord Bingham (then Lord Chief Justice) and Baroness Butler-Sloss.  She then returned to Oxford to take the BCL, focusing on public international law and human rights law, before joining the legal cadre of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office.  As well as in London, she served in Geneva as Legal Adviser to the UK Mission to the United Nations and in Strasbourg as UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe.
