Kate is Director of the University’s Diplomatic Studies Programme and a member of the Law Faculty. A lawyer and a diplomat, her interests lie in diplomacy, public international law and human rights law.  Kate read law at Somerville, then trained and qualified as a commercial litigation solicitor in London. During this period she spent several months at the Court of Appeal, as a judicial assistant.  She then returned to Oxford to take the BCL, focusing on public international law and human rights law, before joining the legal cadre of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. At the FCO she provided legal advice on a wide range of matters, such as counter-terrorism, human rights, the law of armed conflict, privileges and immunities, migration and immigration, aviation and the law relating to the UK’s Overseas Territories.  She served in Geneva as Legal Adviser to the United Kingdom’s Mission to the United Nations and in Strasbourg as the United Kingdom’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe.
