Tony Harris is an entrepreneur, technologist and inventor with over 25 years of imaging industry experience. Over the years, Tony has spoken at various industry conferences around the world and has appeared on USA and UK television (Tomorrow’s World and The Computer Chronicles).
Initially a systems programmer, Tony moved to Digital Research (DRI) in the UK and later California as Product Manager and Business Unit Manager for Graphics Environment Manager (GEM). In 1989, Tony co-founded Software 2000 (UK) Ltd, developing and licensing MS-DOS driver technologies to OEM printer manufacturers worldwide. Under Tony’s technical leadership the company invented an innovative new imaging pipeline which revolutionized the quality and performance of color inkjet printing on Microsoft Windows. In 1992, EPSON licensed this PrintMagic® technology for the EPSON Stylus Color printer to enable consumer digital photography on the desktop. Canon, TI, Lexmark and many other OEM printer manufacturers quickly followed suit and Software 2000 began growing exponentially. By 2001, the company (now Software Imaging) had operations in Canada, UK, USA and Japan and was developing Macintosh and Windows driver technologies for Inkjets, Laser Printers and Digital Copiers (CDA) for major OEMs such as HP, Konica Minolta and Ricoh. The company won numerous Queen’s awards for export and featured in various high profile European corporate league tables.
As well as having a number of published patents (including InkSaver® and TonerSaver®); Tony has been profiled by the London Sunday Times. He was twice a finalist for the Ernst & Young ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ and was a joint recipient of The Prince of Wales Award for Technological Achievement. Tony exited Software Imaging in 2007 via an MBO but he has continued to maintain a keen interest in digital imaging with a particular focus on the humanities.
Tony completed his MA in English Language and Literature at Oxford University as a mature student in 2010 followed by an MA (Res) in Medieval Studies. While at Oxford, Tony also mentored for the Oxford Entrepreneur Society. He is currently studying for a PhD at the University of Cambridge and is a Mentor and Team Coach for entrepreneurs on the ‘Accelerate’ programme at the Judge Business School. When he has any free time, he enjoys cycling, skiing and flying helicopters. He has coached rowing at Oxford and Cambridge and is a national rowing umpire.
