Elizabeth Gemmill was appointed in October 2006 as a University Lecturer in Local History in the Department for Continuing Education, and in 2010 as Director of the Department’s Weekly Class Programme. Elizabeth’s research and teaching are in the field of medieval history. Her special interests are in ecclesiastical patronage rights and the character of the diocesan clergy, prices of consumables, and valuations in medieval inquisitions. She is co-author with Nicholas Mayhew of Changing Values in Medieval Scotland: A Study of Prices, Money, and Weights and Measures (Cambridge University Press, 1995). She has published a scholarly edition, Aberdeen Guild Court Records, 1437 – 1468 (Scottish History Society, 2005) and a monograph, The Nobility and Ecclesiastical Patronage in Thirteenth-Century England (Woodbridge: Boydell, 2013). She is currently preparing a data base of valuations of churches in thirteenth- and fourteenth-century inquisitions post mortem.

Elizabeth was named in 2012 as ‘Most Acclaimed Lecturer’ in the Department for Continuing Education by Oxford University Student Union.

In 2015 Elizabeth was elected as Kellogg College’s first Proctor and took office in March 2016.
