Postdoctoral Researcher, Department of Experimental Psychology
Department of Experimental Psychology
PhD; MSc (Bonn); MSc (University of Toronto); BSc (Bonn);
Marcel is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Experimental Psychology, focusing on the intersection of sleep and memory. His current research with Prof Staresina utilizes recordings from individual neurons in epilepsy patients to elucidate the underlying physiological mechanisms of memory and sleep. Additionally, he explores non-invasive techniques to boost memory consolidation and tackle cognitive decline. His PhD work with Prof Mormann in Bonn has explored how individual neurons encode odors in the human brain.
Marcel has a dual background in medicine and physics. Before shifting his focus to neuroscience, he worked in astrophysics and was part of the LIGO scientific community, in which he contributed to the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of gravitational waves. He further tested Einstein’s theory of general relativity using pulsars. Beyond his academic pursuits, Marcel supports women’s education in Colombia through an NGO.
