Dr Joonghyun Kwak

Postdoctoral Researcher, Department of Education

Joonghyun is a postdoctoral researcher in quantitative social science for the ‘International Student Mobility and World Development’ project in the Department of Education. 

As a comparative sociologist, Joonghyun specialises in globalization, international development, social and educational inequalities, and quantitative research methods. His research aims to deepen our understanding of how structural changes in the global economy influence social and educational institutions, as well as individual behaviours and attitudes. His current research focuses on three primary areas: (1) the backlash against globalization and international student mobility; (2) social mobility and educational inequalities; and (3) methodologies for ex-post survey data harmonisation in cross-national comparative research. 

Joonghyun completed his PhD in Sociology at the University of Connecticut (USA) and has held postdoctoral positions at The Ohio State University (USA) and the University of Essex (UK). He currently serves on the editorial board of the British Journal of Sociology of Education.
