Justin works in the J. Knight group at the Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics, and has a special interest in immunity. He believes investigating genomic datasets, using techniques such as tensor decomposition and deep learning, should help us better understand how our immune system can become dysregulated, as well as leading us to promising drug targets and better treatments for those suffering from sepsis or auto-immune diseases. His other responsibilities also include teaching Statistics to first year DPhil in Genomic Medicine and Statistics students.
Justin previously worked as a post-doctoral fellow on the genetics of cancer and rare diseases at the Centro Nacional de Análisis Genómico in Spain and as a doctoral student researching plant evolution at the Université d’Evry-Val-d’Essonne in France. His research experience also includes modelling fluid dynamics at the Universidade da Beira Interior in Portugal and studying upper level atmosphere dynamics with the British Antarctic Survey, both as a post-graduate researcher.
Though currently working in genomics, he is open to working together in other fields where big data may help. Computer code developed for rare disease research, it can be retooled, for example, to mine English literature for quotations to make a literary clock.
