Roger Thomas

Roger studied archaeology at the universities of Southampton and Cambridge, and then joined English Heritage (now Historic England) in 1984.  He held a number of senior archaeological positions there until 2017. He also has a degree in Law, and was called to the Bar in 2004. He is currently an Honorary Research Associate in the School of Archaeology, University of Oxford.

His research interests include the British Bronze Age and Iron Age, landscape archaeology, development-led archaeology, and legal aspects of heritage protection. He has lectured and published widely on a broad range of archaeological and heritage topics.

He teaches one of the core papers on the Department for Continuing Education’s MSc in Applied Landscape Archaeology, and also regularly directs day and weekend courses and professional training courses in archaeology and heritage protection.
