The book chosen for the Michaelmas Term Short Book Club meeting is The Outsider by the author Albert Camus.

In The Outsider, Camus’s classic existentialist novel, he delves into the isolation of an individual who rejects society’s expectations. The protagonist, Meursault, refuses to pretend or conform. When his mother dies, he declines to display false emotion merely to meet social convention. Later, after a seemingly senseless act of violence on a sun-scorched beach near Algiers, his absence of remorse makes him appear even more culpable in the eyes of others. Yet, beneath his indifference, Meursault emerges as much a victim of society’s judgement as he is a perpetrator of crime.
