Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast held on the eve of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday. Lent, the 40 days preceding Easter, has historically been observed as a period of fasting. On Shrove Tuesday, Anglo Saxon Christians would attend confession and be ‘shriven’, meaning they received absolution for their sins.
