What does it take to create a painting? And what does it take to preserve one for future generations?

Join acclaimed portrait artist Lucy Stopford, whose work has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and Claire Shepherd, Senior Paintings Conservator at the Royal Collection, for a fascinating conversation exploring paintings from two very different, yet deeply connected, perspectives.

During the event, Lucy will paint a live portrait on stage, demonstrating her alla prima technique, developed through her sight-size training in Florence. As the portrait unfolds, Lucy and Claire will discuss the contrasting and complementary nature of their work, from the artist’s creative process to the conservator’s meticulous care of centuries-old masterpieces. Moving between artistic inspiration and technical expertise, the discussion will explore the materials, methods and mindset behind painting and conservation. Together, they will consider the physical and philosophical nature of artworks, with a particular focus on the one element that shapes both practices above all else: time.

Whether you’re an artist, an art lover, or simply curious about how paintings are made and cared for, this event offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from those who create and conserve some of our most treasured works of art.
