Kellogg College is pleased to host a panel discussion to mark the launch of Why the Social Sciences Matter – More Than Ever, a new and updated collection of essays, edited by Kellogg College President, Professor Jonathan Michie, and Professor Sir Cary Cooper.
The book brings together leading scholars to demonstrate how the social sciences help us make sense of the defining challenges of our age: climate change, inequality, migration, global conflict and more. It has been revised and expanded from its 2015 edition with nine new chapters to reflect more recent global and social‐scientific developments (e.g. populism, sustainable development, productivity, wellbeing).
Chaired by:
- Jonathan Michie, President of Kellogg College and Professor of Innovation & Knowledge Exchange, University of Oxford
With panellists:
- Marya Besharov, Official Fellow of Kellogg College; Professor of Organisations & Impact and Academic Director of the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford
- Robin Cohen, Senior Research Fellow of Kellogg College; Professor Emeritus of Development Studies, University of Oxford
- Will Hutton, President of the Academy of Social Sciences
- Iyiola Solanke, Jacques Delors Professor of European Union Law, University of Oxford
- Gabriel J. Stylianides, Professor of Mathematics Education, University of Oxford
The book argues that disciplines such as economics, education, political science, psychology and sociology are not optional extras but vital for understanding how technological and natural-science advances translate into human outcomes. With fresh insight into climate justice, populism, productivity, sustainable development and social wellbeing, it presents a compelling interdisciplinary case for the role of the social sciences in shaping a better future.
This event is open to academics, postgraduate students, policy professionals, employers, journalists and members of the public with an interest in how evidence and research can influence policy, practice and society.
Tea and coffee will be available from 5pm, with the panel discussion taking place from 5.30-6.30pm. All participants are also invited to join a drinks reception immediately following the event to network and continue discussions.
