DPhil student wins the Kellogg Cruttenden Scholarship
Kellogg DPhil student Liz Preston has won the Cruttenden Scholarship, which is exclusive to Kellogg and based on academic merit.
The Cruttenden scholarship has been awarded towards Liz Preston’s PhD research, providing financial support and student accommodation for the tenure of the scholarship.
It is an honour to receive this scholarship. A financial contribution will certainly help towards meeting the costs of my studies, and I am exceptionally grateful for this. Receiving the scholarship has had a positive impact on my own confidence and focus in my upcoming studies. – Liz Preston
Liz is a registered nurse who now works in Clinical Education. She had a varied and exciting career in complex and emergency nursing, working alongside NHS colleagues in clinically acute settings and as a nursing officer in the Merchant Navy, which enabled her to travel the world.
Her journey to Oxford has been a highly rewarding departure from her professional life. She pursued further studies in history purely out of a passion for the subject and a desire to challenge herself. She studied at the Department of Continuing Education, beginning with distance learning courses gaining an Advanced Diploma in Local History, moving on to a Postgraduate Certificate in Historical Studies, and finally completing her Masters in Historical Studies at Oxford in 2024. To date, she has focused on health care provision and nursing care during the English Civil Wars.
This year, Liz will be joining the Faculty of History to embark on her DPhil, which combines her passion for history and her medical background. Her PhD research will build upon her previous work at Oxford University, and examine the impact of the English Civil Wars on the standard of healthcare provision in the Navy. Liz feels privileged to be able to pursue her studies at Oxford University and Kellogg College and achieve her long-held aspirations. Her future ambition is that history will continue to play an important role in her life, both personally and professionally.
I found Kellogg College incredibly welcoming and encouraging, as well as nurturing and understanding to those who may be studying part-time, or be slightly older like myself. Due to the positive experience I had last year, I was adamant to remain at Kellogg when continuing my studies.
