Thomson was a distinguished leader of natural history museums, and author of several books and essays on palaeontology, the history of science and evolution. He served as Director of the Peabody Museum, Dean of the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and CEO of the Academy of Natural Sciences, before returning to England in 1998 as director of the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Following his retirement in 2003, he returned to the US where he continued his research and served as the Executive Officer of the American Philosophical Society from 2012-2017.

A distinguished evolutionary biologist and historian of science, Keith made significant contributions to our understanding of the transition from water to land in vertebrate evolution, as well as the study of ancient and living fishes. Beyond his remarkable scientific career, Keith will be remembered at Kellogg for his warmth, generosity, and unwavering support for the College, even long after his formal retirement.

Reflecting on his legacy, Professor Jonathan Michie, President of Kellogg College, said: “Keith Thomson was an inspirational individual, and always remained a great friend and supporter of Kellogg College. He will be remembered fondly and with admiration.”

Keith’s passion for knowledge and dedication to fostering academic inquiry continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. Kellogg College extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
