Staff support Giving Day with a competitive Cake-Off

June 20, 2023

A Cake-Off in the Hub brought together College staff in support of our first-ever Giving Day, through a display of culinary talent and creativity.

The Cake-Off opened with a speech by the President, Professor Jonathan Michie, who commended the staff for their remarkable culinary efforts. The cakes, which showcased the Gardens theme, were then carefully tasted and judged by the College’s own Stephane Lisner, who brought his expertise as Dining Hall Manager to the judging process.

The winner of the competition was Jo Doyle, Accommodation Manager, whose Lemon Cake impressed the judges with its delicate taste, smooth buttercream, and well-balanced flavours. Jo drew inspiration from her favourite flavours of lemon and incorporated sugar work garden flowers into the decoration, creating a light and refreshing treat perfect for a summer’s day.

In addition to the overall winner, special recognition was given for the Best Decorated Cake which went to Elizabeth Dawson, a member of the Development Team, for her Hobbit Hole cake. Complete with a whimsical garden path and meticulously crafted garden plants, Elizabeth’s was inspired by the garden and former North Oxford resident J. R. R. Tolkien.

The prize for Best Effort went to Alumni Relations and Events Executive, Alex Hoeffler, who crafted a banana and custard cake. What made Alex’s achievement even more impressive was the fact that he managed to create his cake without owning an oven, demonstrating resourcefulness and dedication.

The baking competition not only generated friendly competition among the College staff but also contributed to the fundraising efforts of Kellogg Giving Day. Through their participation and generous donations, the staff members demonstrated their commitment to supporting the transformation of the College gardens and enriching the lives of the community.

We extend our congratulations to all the participants and winners of the baking competition. Thank you to everyone involved in making the baking competition a success!
