Dr Abul Hasan

Research Member of Common Room

Researcher

Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences

Abul Hasan joined the University of Oxford in June 2025 as an ML/AI Scientist in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, where he works under the supervision of Dr Subhashisa Swain in the Medical Statistics Group. His research focuses on developing artificial intelligence tools to support Structured Medication Reviews for patients living with dementia, with the broader aim of improving clinical decision-making and patient outcomes in primary care.

Before his appointment at Oxford, Abul was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institute of Health Informatics, University College London, where he contributed to the Artificial Intelligence and Multimorbidity (AIM-CISC) programme. There, he developed adverse event prediction models using NLP and machine learning, and pioneered methods for infusing clinical knowledge into transformer tokenisers, leading to applications in a range of downstream clinical NLP tasks.

Abul earned his PhD in Natural Language Processing and Biomedical Informatics from Birkbeck, University of London, where his research explored extracting structured medical information from social media. He has also taught machine learning and data science at UCL and Birkbeck, and previously held academic positions in computer science in Bangladesh. His interests include clinical natural language processing, causal inference in healthcare, and the development of AI systems that are both robust and clinically useful.
