Adam Chong is an Associate Professor of Phonology and Language Processing in the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics. His research examines how people produce and perceive the speech sounds in the languages they speak, and how our minds make sense of what we hear – the linguistics fields of phonetics, phonology and psycholinguistics. He is also interested in how we acquire this implicit linguistic knowledge in childhood. His research draws on insights from a wide variety of languages, with current focus on Singapore English and Atara Imere (an Austronesian language spoken in Vanuatu).

Prior to joining Oxford in 2025, he was Reader of Linguistics in the Department of Linguistics at Queen Mary University of London (2017-2025). Adam was educated in Singapore and Australia, before receiving his PhD in Linguistics at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2017.
