Dr Amanda Chadburn FSA FSAScot is an archaeologist and historic environment adviser.

She started her career in local government and moved to English Heritage/ Historic England where she worked for over 35 years until 2022, holding various roles including Inspector of Ancient Monuments, Team Leader, Lead Adviser for the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site and various national policy roles. She was seconded to the Heritage Team of the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport during the pandemic.

She taught and supervised for many years on the University of Oxford’s “In Service” post-graduate Certificate in Archaeology and the MSc Diploma in Archaeology. She currently teaches archaeology and heritage management on the MSc in Applied Landscape Archaeology. She has also taught at the Universities of Bristol, UCL, and Huddersfield.

Amanda has served on numerous boards and committees including the Council of the Society of Antiquaries of London, the Archaeology Panel of the National Trust, and the Executive Board of the European Association of Archaeologists. She was elected as a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1999, as a Corresponding Member of the German Archaeological Institute in 2009, and as a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 2023.

She is Secretary of the charity World Heritage UK. As well as teaching and voluntary work in the sector, Amanda undertakes consultancy and research work. Her research interests include the prehistory of Britain; Iron Age (Celtic) coinage; landscape archaeology; archaeoastronomy, heritage management and World Heritage Sites. She has written a popular book about astronomy at Stonehenge with Clive Ruggles – Stonehenge: Sighting the Sun was published by Historic England/ Liverpool University Press in May 2024.
