Mr Andy Bowery
Member of Common Room
PDRA Senior Research Software Engineer, Systems Architect & Infrastructure Manager, climateprediction.net
Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, Oxford e-Research Centre
Andy specialism is in big data, AI and distributed computing.
Andy’s primary work is on the ORCHID research platform. The ORCHID platform is a big data platform holding data from multiple UK clinical systems. ORCHID enables surveillance, epidemiological, trial and prospective studies to be conducted.
In addition, Andy works with the CPDN (climateprediction.net) project based in the Oxford e-Research Centre. The CPDN project is a volunteer distributed computing platform where large numbers of simulations of the climate are run on the computers of volunteer members of the public. Volunteer distributed computing enables a number of climate studies to be performed that cannot be performed through other means. The results the project gets from these simulations enable various aspects of the changing climate to be studied, in particular the effects of our changing climate. Andy has worked with the CPDN project for over 10 years during which time over 100 publications have resulted from the work of the project.
Andy is an AI Ambassador in the MSD faculty.
In his spare time he is involved in the University Walking Club where he is regularly involved in long distance challenge walks (50 miles and 100 miles).
