Dr Daniel Flavian

Fellow, Junior Research Fellow

Academic Visitor

Department of Physics

BSc Zaragoza, MSc, DSc ETH Zurich

Daniel is a Researcher in the Department of Physics since 2024, specialising in solid state physics with a focus on quantum magnetism and strongly frustrated magnetic systems. His work is supported by a fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). His research explores novel magnetic phenomena at the frontiers of quantum mechanics, aiming to deepen our understanding of complex quantum materials. He combines innovative synthesis techniques with advanced experimental and numerical methods to uncover the mechanisms that drive exotic magnetic behaviour in these systems. Daniel completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Zaragoza (Spain) and earned his PhD from ETH Zurich (Switzerland) in 2024.

During his doctoral work, he investigated the unique properties of one-dimensional magnetic materials, conducting collaborative projects at major international research facilities across the United States, Germany, and Japan. Beyond the lab, he is deeply committed to science communication and outreach, contributing to initiatives such as Oxford Physics Outreach. He is also passionate about integrating sustainability into research and academic life, always seeking ways to reduce environmental impact while advancing scientific discovery.
