Dr James Lee is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Oxford, based in the Impact and Shock Mechanics Group. His research focuses on the characterisation and optimisation of additively manufactured (AM) structures for energy dissipation and protective applications, particularly under high strain-rate and impact loading conditions. He specialises in the mechanical response of low-impedance materials, including polymer-based AM lattices, aiming to inform the design of lightweight, multifunctional protective systems.
James completed his PhD at Imperial College London under the supervision of Dr William Proud, where he investigated the dynamic performance of architected AM lattice structures. At Oxford, he has continued to develop novel experimental diagnostics and methodologies that enable highly sensitive, rate-dependent testing of complex materials. His broader interests lie in advanced material systems that integrate structural efficiency with adaptive energy-dissipation capabilities.
