Dr Nicolas Schalch
Postdoctoral Research Assistant
Department of Physics
Before joining Oxford University, Nicolas completed his undergraduate studies at ETH Zurich and pursued his PhD at the University of Bern. His research focuses on improving theoretical predictions for experiments conducted at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), operated by CERN in Geneva. At the LHC, accelerated protons collide at nearly the speed of light, annihilating into a spray of new elementary particles.
Before these constituents reach the detector, each of them radiates additional particles, building up an entire cascade of particles. Accurately predicting the distribution of these complex final states is challenging; therefore, together with his collaborators, he is developing numerical techniques to advance these predictions beyond the current state of the art.
