Dr Roland Turnell-Ritson

Senior Research Associate

Department of Chemistry

Roland is a researcher in inorganic chemistry and catalysis. He completed his PhD at Imperial College London, studying hydrogen activation using heavier main group elements. He then moved to EPFL, Switzerland, to explore CO2 hydrogenation, biomass valorisation and plastic recycling by heterogeneous catalysts. He also worked on the characterisation of perovskite materials for photovoltaics. Roland started at Oxford in 2025, to work with Professor Dermot O’Hare. His research spans materials and organometallic chemistry for sustainability. In particular, he is interested in Direct Air Capture of CO2, CO2 conversion, and polymerisation. He is also involved in collaboration with industry and the commercialisation of sustainability technology, primarily through the SCG-Oxford Centre of Excellence, of which he is the Deputy Director.
