Tom Buchanan was elected a Fellow of the college in October 1990, some six months after it was founded. He held the office of university Assessor in 2003-04. At OUDCE he is the co-Director of the Foundation Certificate in History (the part-time equivalent of the first year of the undergraduate degree in History) and Director of the International Summer Programme in History, Politics and Society. He was Research Director of the History Faculty’s Modern European History Research Centre, 2011-14, and continues to serve on the Centre’s Board of Management. He has held a number of college offices including Vice-President and Dean.

Professor Buchanan’s research has focused on the relationship between Britain and the wider world in the C20th, and he has a particular interest in the Spanish Civil War. He is currently writing a book on Amnesty International and the emergence of human rights activism in post-war Britain. He has published the following books: The Spanish Civil War and the British Labour Movement (Cambridge University Press, 1991); Political Catholicism in Europe, 1918-1965 (Oxford University Press, 1996), (co-edited with Martin Conway); Britain and the Spanish Civil War (CUP, 1997); Europe’s Troubled Peace: 1945-2000 (Blackwell’s, 2006; second revised edition, Wiley-Blackwell 2012; Polish edition 2010); The Impact of the Spanish Civil War on Britain: War, loss and memory (Sussex Academic Press, 2007), and East Wind: China and the British Left, 1925-1976 (OUP, 2012).
