Emeritus Fellow to Lead Archaeological Tour in Northern Spain
Professor Gary Lock, Emeritus Fellow of Kellogg College and Emeritus Professor of Archaeology at the University of Oxford, will be leading a tour of archaeological sites in Asturias, north-western Spain, in May 2026.
The ten-night tour, titled The Real Spain, will be run by Hidden History Travel and will offer participants the opportunity to explore some of the country’s most remarkable prehistoric landscapes. Combining expert insight with first-hand experience, the tour promises a unique perspective on the archaeology and heritage of this beautiful region.
Professor Lock, who joined Kellogg as a Fellow in 1993 and has served as Dean of Degrees since 2010, and is a leading figure in the field of landscape archaeology and computer applications in archaeology, particularly the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS). His research focuses on modelling visibility and movement within ancient landscapes, as well as the study of British later prehistory, especially hillforts and their surrounding environments.
In addition to the upcoming tour, Professor Lock’s latest book, Travels Through Prehistoric Spain: A Guide, was published by Archaeopress in earlier this year. The new publication offers detailed descriptions of prehistoric monuments across Spain, including directions and contextual background for each site.
