Highlights from our recent event: Anne McLaren Lecture 2025

June 3, 2025

On 23 May, Kellogg College hosted the 2025 Anne McLaren Lecture, celebrating the enduring impact of women in science.

The annual event, held in honour of Dr Anne McLaren, a pioneering geneticist and stem-cell scientist, provided a platform for critical discussion on the contributions, challenges and future of women in the scientific field.

This year’s panel featured three leading academics: Professor Dame Kay Davies, Professor Niki Trigoni, and Dr Hilary Wynne. The conversation was chaired by Dr Judith Hillier.

Through personal insight and professional reflection, the panellists explored what progress has been made and what remains to be done in supporting women to thrive in scientific careers. Topics ranged from mentoring and institutional culture to the intersection of science, policy and lived experience.

The event also shone a spotlight on the next generation of researchers, as the College announced the 2025 Anne McLaren Award for Excellence recipients:

  • Veronika Denner (MSc in Global Health Science and Epidemiology)

  • Katarzyna Galka (MSc by Research in Women’s and Reproductive Health)

As a College and as part of the wider University of Oxford community, the Anne McLaren Lecture serves as a meaningful annual reminder of the importance of representation, opportunity and perseverance in scientific research. It continues to inspire, provoke dialogue and honour the legacy of one of Oxford’s most distinguished alumnae.
