Dr Hilary Wynne

Research Fellow

Senior Research Associate

Faculty of Linguistics

I am the Senior Research Associate in the Language and Brain Laboratory (based with the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics) where I work on an EPSRC-funded grant (2022-2027). My research involves experimentally investigating (through psycholinguistic behavioural techniques and neurolinguistic approaches) the extent to which underlying patterns govern the processing of sounds in related languages.

I am also working (with an external partner) on eliciting neurolinguistic evidence for the processing of specialised languages by experts (e.g. in aviation). We use data collected via behavioural methods, brain imaging (EEG, fMRI), speech recordings, eye-tracking, survey responses, and corpus investigations. The bulk of my fieldwork is conducted in Kolkata, India. I also provide tutorials and lectures for undergraduates and graduates in the Faculty of Linguistics.

My other University roles include: the Early Career Research Representative on University Council (ending MT 2024), Vice-Chair of the Research Staff Consultation Group (RSCG), and Research Staff Steering Committee (RSSC). I have also served as a researcher representative for the Faculty of Linguistics, the Humanities Division, the Chancellor Election Committee, and the Employer Justified Retirement Age (EJRA) Review Group.

Prior to my current position, I was a postdoctoral researcher on an ERC-funded grant (2017-2022), a Departmental Lecturer in Psycholinguistics (2020-2021), Departmental Lecturer in Phonology (2015-2016) at the University of Oxford, and a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Manchester (2015-2017).
