Jane Rae announced recipient of the Brenda M. King Award for Critical Writing
The Textile Society recently announced the recipients of the Brenda M. King Award for Critical Writing (2024) including Kellogg graduate Jane Rae (graduating 2024).
Her paper Lasting Impressions: The Sensory Language of Gloves in Early Modern Elite Society formed part of her dissertation submitted towards the MSt in Literature & Arts (MLA). Jane’s interest in textile history evolved from a career in publishing, working with heritage organisations, and she has long been interested in the material culture of textiles. Her recent studies under the interdisciplinary umbrella of the MSt in Literature & Arts allowed her to develop a deeper appreciation of the value of exploring material culture through many lenses. Her paper offered a new, sensorial investigation of the language of gloves in early modern, elite society considering the glove’s haptic characteristics.
‘Returning to academic life broadened my understanding of the power of objects to mediate between the past and present. Brenda King’s resolute pursuit of her academic aspirations, which she realised later in life, is an inspiration to me.’
