Meet Africa-Oxford Scholar, Fauziat Serunjogi (MSc in Education)
Fauziat has been awarded the Africa Oxford Initiative Scholarship and joined us this term to study for an MSc in Education.
My primary goal is to make a substantial contribution towards enhancing educational outcomes and expanding opportunities for people in sub-Saharan Africa – Fauziat Serunjogi
What inspired you to apply to study at the University of Oxford and Kellogg College?
I have a desire to transform education in the Global South. I am interested in the ways that education systems, policies, and practices vary worldwide, and the impact that these have on individuals and communities. My ambition is to become an influential expert on education, delivering high-value sustainable solutions to tackle the world’s most pressing problems. Particularly, those shaped by the design, access, and management of education.
My first step towards this ambition was to study for a bachelor’s degree in social work at McGill University. Here I learned the various ways that social contexts shape people’s lives. I then studied for a master’s degree in African and International Development at the University of Edinburgh, where I strengthened my understanding of complex development issues. I chose to pursue further study at the University of Oxford because it is a globally renowned university with excellent facilities and student resources.
I chose Kellogg College because it has support specifically designed to cater to the wellbeing of international students. Individualised and comprehensive support systems such as this contribute to positive and constructive environments for both academic and personal growth.
What aspect of Oxford life are you most looking forward to?
I’m eager to engage with the world-class academic environment at Oxford. The opportunity to learn from leading experts in my field and to be challenged by the rigorous curriculum is something I’m really looking forward to.
I also look forward to being part of a vibrant and diverse community from around the world. The opportunity to exchange ideas, collaborate on projects, and gain new perspectives from peers is something I anticipate will be enriching both academically and personally.
With the financial support of the Africa Oxford Scholarship, I will be able to take full advantage of all that the University of Oxford has to offer. This includes not only excellent academic resources, but also extracurricular activities, and networking opportunities. This will enrich my educational experience beyond the classroom.
What are your hopes for the future?
After graduating, I would like to pursue a PhD in education leadership and policy. My overarching vision is to create a world where every student can thrive and achieve through inclusive educational policies. Beyond envisioning myself as a public servant, I also see myself as an architect of education policy, and creative systems which are both effective and compassionate.
I hope to establish a consultancy firm that will work collaboratively with Uganda’s Ministry of Education. This firm will specialise in providing comprehensive teacher training. Additionally, I hope to carry out rigorous, evidence-based research aimed at shaping and informing education policies across sub-Saharan Africa.
My primary goal is to make a substantial contribution towards enhancing educational outcomes and expanding opportunities for people in the region.
