Watch the film: The changing economic and social-policy making of the African National Congress

December 13, 2019

The ANC’s policy mission, to establish a redistributive social democratic welfare state, was undermined by the lack of a convincing economic policy framework or egregiously misguided thinking. Confronting those choices could meaningfully contribute to a societal recalibration – a ‘good society’ that South Africans still hold out for.

On the 28 November, Professor Vishnu Padayachee (above left) and Professor Robert van Niekerk (above right) of the University of Witwatersrand, and authors of ‘’Shadow of Liberation: Contestation and Compromise in the Economic and Social Policy of the African National Congress, 1943-1996’’, visited Kellogg to discuss their insights into the ANC’s policy shifts in the early years of democracy.
