Dr Aleksandro Montanha

Ambassador for Global Digital Innovation Network

Aleksandro Montanha is a Brazilian researcher and sustainability strategist with a deep commitment to transparency, ethical governance, and data accountability. He currently serves as a member of the Commission on Sustainability Data (CSD) at Kellogg College, University of Oxford. Dr. Montanha is a member of the Commission’s Public and Municipal Working Group and heads the Commission’s initiative in Brazil, where he is currently conducting a detailed carbon accounting case study on the city of Ivaiporã. His work within the Commission focuses on building data-driven governance frameworks that support sustainable development, institutional transparency, and municipal innovation.

He holds a PhD in Software Engineering from the University of Seville (Spain) and a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the State University of Maringá (Brazil). Over the past two decades, he has built a career at the intersection of academic research, public innovation, and applied artificial intelligence. Aleksandro is the founder of the Institute for Applied Artificial Intelligence (IIAA), and for 15 years he served as a university professor in Brazil, mentoring students and leading applied research in smart cities and inclusive technologies.

He currently leads the Korean Valley project in Brazil—an international cooperation initiative backed by the Global Digital Innovation Network (GDIN), a South Korean foundation. The project connects South Korean innovation ecosystems with Brazilian cities to accelerate technological development aligned with ESG priorities and digital infrastructure. As GDIN’s ambassador in Brazil, Aleksandro fosters partnerships between local governments, private companies, and academic institutions.

He also served as chair of the Smart Cities Committee at ABINC (Brazilian Association of the Internet of Things), where he now remains an active member. His work has consistently aimed to advance public-private collaboration for environmentally responsible innovation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he received a Special Commendation from the Legislative Assembly of the State of Paraná for developing rapid-response decontamination solutions. His IoT projects have been internationally recognized, including two-time finalist honors at Intel’s Connected Americas, as well as recognition from the IoT World Congress and Fundación MAPFRE.

Currently, Aleksandro is focused on integrating data sustainability frameworks with cities and public and private institutions in Brazil. He also contributes as a statistical programmer to global academic collaborations—most notably supporting research validation for Duke University’s (CESO). His work consistently bridges data science, public innovation, and ethical practice—driven by a belief that transparency and collaboration are fundamental to meaningful impact.
