David Mant is former head of the Oxford University Department of Primary Health Care and a retired NHS general practitioner. He remains a non-executive Director of the Oxford University Hospitals Trust. He has a long-standing research interest in the early diagnosis of common diseases in primary care, particularly serious childhood infections and cancer. Since his retirement from clinical work in 2011, he has had more time to focus on initiatives to improve the quality of primary care in less economically developed countries, including confidential enquiry into the circumstances of child deaths in sub-Saharan Africa (for example, see https://doi.org/10.1016/S2214-109X(18)30215-8). His very limited spare time is taken up by gardening and grandchildren.
