He spent 6 months after his initial qualification year in Restorative, Prosthetics and Periodontics at Birmingham Dental Hospital and subsequently, several years in full-time Oro-maxillo Facial surgery. He went on to complete the Senior House Surgeon General Surgical Oxford rotation including Plastic Surgery, ENT, Orthopaedics (hip replacements, knee replacements) and All General Trauma (road traffic accidents, military wounds and reconstruction), Urology and Renal (kidney) Transplantation, Accident and Emergency and General Surgery including vascular surgery, upper GI and lower GI surgery, thyroid surgery and internal trauma from accidents etc. bowel cancer and intestinal resections etc). He obtained his General Instructor Training qualification for teaching ALS (for example) which was recognised by the General Resuscitation Council. He maintains current qualifications in either ALS or ILS in order to offer sedation services. In the hospital setting, however, he has had formal training in treating all types of facial fractures, facial trauma, head and neck cancer from time in Oro-maxillo-facial Surgery and Plastic surgery including cleft lips and cleft palate, craniofacial surgery and head and neck reconstruction. He is also very happy dealing with all types of ears, nasal and sinus and throat problems from years of working as an ENT doctor. This experience allows a balanced approach in dealing with all types of surgery and is always brought to bear in any other surgery including all aspects of oral surgery. The same surgical techniques are used in all types of surgery. He has been placing dental implants (pioneered by Professor Branemark in Gothenburg, Sweden) for over 30 years and has taught and lectured on the subject for several years at several Universities. He was an active member of the Association Of Dental Implantologists (ADI) and he also ran the Oxfordshire Regional branch of the ADI for some years. After having built up several implant and Oral Surgery practices throughout Oxford, London and the home counties, he continues to be an implant clinician with a strong commitment to education. He was involved in teaching on Warwick University’s MSc in Implantology, almost exclusively running the Bone Grafting Module amongst other surgical modules and was appointed as an Honorary Clinical Teacher for the University (2010 – 2014). In addition to this, he was appointed as an Honorary Senior Lecturer for GIFT (Generic Implantology Forum and Training) and subsequently as a Senior Clinical Teacher for BPP University. This included a comprehensive program delivering lectures and clinical teaching on patients on all aspects of Implantology. He is happy to deal with the simplest eg restore a single missing tooth, to the most advanced of clinical cases where full mouth rehabilitation to restore all the upper and lower dentition is required. Where reconstruction of the upper or lower jaws is required using bone grafts, he has had extensive experience in performing all the soft tissue and bone graft techniques required in this field, taking donor grafts from the iliac crests (hips), radial forearm flaps, and mandibular and maxillary and cranial bone grafts. He has dealt with all types of oral surgery in both the hospital setting and in clinic settings, for over 30 years, he can offer gentle, efficient surgical procedures in an accessible and very patient-friendly approach. Since 1998 he has been carrying out a full range of oral surgery as a hospital-based doctor and from 1994 to the current day (June 2024) he has also been performing all types of dentoalveolar oral surgery that would normally have been referred to hospital Oral Surgery departments for Daycase treatments. To date that would be in the region of well over 16,000 oral surgery patients. This includes … – All surgical dental extractions and surgical removal of wisdom teeth vis. vertically impacted, horizontally impacted and distally impacted. He has been formally trained from qualification to using chisels and osteotomes in all aspects of oral surgery – a skill that is rarely learnt these days! – Removal or enucleation of cystic lesions – dentigerous, solitary bone cysts, developmental (eg nasopalatine cysts), apical and retention cysts, etc. – All apicectomies including performing retrograde apical seals – Block osteotomies from the mandible to maxilla or vice versa with fixation using screws or plates and screws. – Bone grafts using autogenous, autologous or xenographic bone He has been trained in multi-drug sedation and has started in dedicated Oral Surgery Sedation Clinics vis Gibraltar House Clinic in Chatham, Chadwell Heath Sedation Clinic, Watford Sedation Clinic and Whalebone Lane Sedation Clinic. These initially were under General Anaesthetic until 1998, when GA’s were stopped in Dental settings and the switch to sedation-moderated anaesthesia was implemented.
