Dr Kaori Nagai

Kaori is a literary scholar who specialises in animal studies, maritime studies and postcolonial studies, with a strong focus on long-nineteenth century colonial discourses. She is the author of two monographs: Empire of Analogies: Kipling, India and Ireland (Cork UP, 2006), and Imperial Beast Fables: Animals, Cosmopolitanism, and the British Empire (Palgrave McMillan, 2020). She has edited five collections, including most recently Maritime Animals: Ships, Species, Stories (Penn State University Press, 2023), which arose from her collaboration with the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. She is currently the Principal Investigator on an AHRC-funded Networking Project entitled ‘Rethinking Fables in the Age of Environmental Crisis’ (2023-2025).
