Dr Lazaros Belbasis

Dr Lazaros Belbasis is an Intermediate Transition Research Fellow at the Nuffield Department of Population Health. He is currently funded by Oxford British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence. His research aims to identify of novel molecular mechanisms and potential drug targets for ischaemic stroke.
Lazaros joined the Nuffield Department of Population Health in August 2022 after receiving an Oxford Population Health Early Career Research Fellowship. During this fellowship, he focused on integrating large-scale proteomic and transcriptomic data to uncover molecular pathways involved in neurodegenerative diseases.
Lazaros obtained a Medical Degree and a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Ioannina (Greece), where he also trained as a General Practitioner and Family Medicine physician. His doctoral research was funded by the Hellenic Academy of Neuroimmunology and the Greek State Scholarships Foundation and focused on environmental risk factors of neurological diseases.
In addition to his research, Lazaros is a dedicated tutor for undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the Nuffield Department of Population Health. In recognition of his commitment to teaching, he has been awarded an Associate Fellowship by the Advance Higher Education.
