Dr Stephanie Tierney

Stephanie Tierney is a Researcher in Evidence Synthesis at the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, University of Oxford. Her current research centres on social prescribing and addressing the non-medical needs of patients by supporting and signposting them to relevant voluntary and community services. This work includes a realist review of care navigation, whereby people are employed or volunteer to guide patients to local solutions to their non-medical difficulties (e.g. debt, social isolation, bereavement, poor housing). Her research is seeking to explore how care navigation works in practice; to address the question of what works, for whom, in what circumstances and why.

Stephanie completed her PhD in Medical Sciences at the University of Exeter. Whilst undertaking her thesis she worked at the Centre for Evidence-Based Social Services, supporting social care staff in the use of evidence to inform their practice. She then spent several years based in nursing departments (at the University of Manchester and the University of Warwick), teaching students about research methods, and conducting studies focused on living with or providing care for long-term conditions. This research included several systematic reviews of qualitative and quantitative data. Stephanie also holds an undergraduate degree in Journalism Studies and a MA in Disability Studies, both from the University of Sheffield.
