Kellogg College marks LGBT+ History Month
Kellogg College is proud to mark LGBT+ History Month by highlighting a range of Oxford-based activities and events aimed at celebrating the history, achievements, and continued progress of the LGBTQ+ community.
LGBT+ History Month was founded by the charity Schools OUT to be a dedicated space for LGBTQ+ people from a variety of backgrounds to explore their histories. In the UK, it takes place annually in February. We invite all College members to join us this month in celebrating the contributions and voices of the LGBTQ+ community, while continuing to promote the values of equity and belonging within our shared academic environment.
Here are some of the events, exhibitions, networks and resources we invite you to explore:
- The Kellogg LGBTQ+ History Month Lecture 2025 takes place on 13 February, and features Dr Alexandra Hardwick discussing the “monsters” of ancient Greek myth and literature, and how they expose the cracks, constructions, and artifices in the reality around them – and around us. The event will be chaired by Dr Max Van Kleek, Kellogg LGBTQ+ Fellow and Associate Professor of Human-Computer Interaction. Register to attend.
- The Equality and Diversity Unit has organised a special lecture on 27 February, where Costa Poetry Prize winner Dr Mary Jean Chan will explore the role of queer poetry in their own journey of becoming a poet, editor and lecturer of creative writing. Find out more and register to attend.
- Jesus College has organised three events over the month of February, with each one exploring a different aspect of equality, diversity and inclusion. Find out more.
- The Bodleian Library has created a special display, which highlights some lesser known queer stories in history, from the medieval islamicate world to Brighton in the 50s and 60s. Browse their bookshelves.
- The Social Science Library has gathered a display of resources on the theme of Activism and Social Change, as well as on the topic of LGBT+ history more widely. Explore the resources.
At Kellogg College, there are numerous individuals available to provide guidance and mentorship to LGBTQ+ students and staff. Whether you’re looking for academic support or a safe space for personal discussions, College staff are committed to fostering an environment where everyone can thrive. We invite you to reach out and connect with peers and supporters if you’re looking for information, support or connection.
- Dr Max Van Kleek is the LGBTQ+ Fellow at Kellogg College and can offer support or guidance to College members who wish to discuss issues of sexual orientation, gender conformity or related issues.
- GCHU Centre Administrator, Jessie Weavers-Medina, is one of the University’s LGBTQ+ Role Models, and is passionate about improving visibility and support for LGBTQ+ staff and students in Oxford. She was also recently elected as the University’s first designated Transgender Representative on the LGBT+ Advisory Board. View her profile on the Equality and Diversity Unit site.
