Scholarship Stories
Philanthropy plays a vital role in funding scholarships and bursaries, opening doors for talented students who might otherwise be unable to afford higher education.
These gifts not only ease financial burdens but also empower students to focus on their studies and develop their potential. By investing in education, donors help create a more diverse and inclusive academic community, where merit and ambition—not financial circumstances—determine success.
The Tareen Oxford Scholarship – enabling talented students from Pakistan to pursue their degree at Oxford
The donor: The Tareen Oxford Scholarship was made possible by the generous support of alumnus Ali Tareen (2017, EMBA).
‘Impoverished areas like South Punjab need bright, young leaders to bring change to the region. That’s why I started the Tareen Oxford Scholarship. While applying, every applicant will be asked to describe how they plan on giving back to the region.’
The recipient: Jabir Ali (2023, Chemical Biology) comes from what he describes as a “marginalised” district in Jhang, Pakistan, and is now pursuing a DPhil focused on developing new strategies for dealing with antibiotic resistance.
‘Studying at the University of Oxford was no more than a dream until I won the Tareen Oxford Scholarship. I am so grateful that this scholarship has not only enabled me to fulfil that dream, but also, I hope, to play a part in life-saving research into the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance.’
