Alex Coren is an Emeritus Fellow of the College. He was formerly the Director of the Psychodynamic Studies Programme and Director of Studies for Psychology and Counselling in the Department for Continuing Education. Prior to this he was the Deputy Director of the Oxford University Counselling Service and was a clinician at Kings College, London and held posts in the NHS and in Higher and Secondary Education. His particular interests are the application of psychoanalytic ideas to short term therapeutic work in the public and voluntary sectors, and the contexts and curriculum for professional therapeutic trainings. He has written extensively on short term therapeutic interventions and the application of psychoanalytic ideas to the educational process. Major publications include ‘A Psychodynamic Approach to Education’ (1997) and ‘Short Term Psychotherapy’ (2010)

He is an Editor for the Journal Psychodynamic Practice and is a regular contributor and reviewer for professional journals. He is a former Lay member of the Oxford University Postgraduate Medical School (Deanery) and continues with clinical, supervisory and consultancy activities.
