Jim Davies is Professor of Software Engineering and Director of the Oxford EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Health Data Science. He studied mathematics at New College before joining the Computing Laboratory in 1986 for a Masters and a Doctorate. He became a lecturer in software engineering at Oxford in 1995, and led the Software Engineering Programme from 2000 to 2013. His early research concerned the development of techniques for the design and validation of software.

Jim is leading the development of technologies for the management of large volumes of complex data, in support of health data research, healthcare delivery, and electronic government. He acted as Chief Technology Officer for the UK 100,000 Genomes Project from 2013 to 2017, and is clinical informatics lead for the Oxford NIHR BRC and the NIHR Health Informatics Collaborative. He works in the Big Data Institute, part of the Li Ka Shing Centre for Health Information and Discovery, and in the Department of Computer Science.
